Has playing football off-campus helped Pitt football? There’s no denying playing on the North Shore has its advantages in terms of parking, traffic and accessibility more so than playing in Oakland, but the gameday experience just isn’t the same off campus. Alumni love to visit where they spent their college years and all that rekindled, feel good nostalgia is lost by playing off campus. You can’t even see the Cathedral of Learning from the North Shore.
In 2023, you can’t understate how good of a culture the Pitt football team has when guys return to use their one free COVID season of extra eligibility. The Panthers seem quite well stocked on offense with a mixture of talent and experience either returning or transferring in while the defense too has quite a few talented players joining the roster, despite being inexperienced for the most part.
It wasn’t pretty but the 2022 Pitt Football season ended on a high note. 5th Year Senior back-up QB Nick Patti threw for 224 yards on 20 for 41 passing with 1 TD and 1 Int to lead the Panthers to their 9th win on the season en route to a 37-35 last minute win over UCLA in the Sun Bowl. It also gave Pitt head coach his fifth straight win to close out the season and 20 wins in the past 2 seasons, something the Panthers have not accomplished in 2 years since the 1981 and 1982 seasons.
When you have the 65th ranked offense in college football, things aren’t going very well. A 5-4 record speaks for itself. After giving away games vs Georgia Tech and Louisville with turnovers and salvaging a win vs Syracuse, Pitt looks to finish a down year with 3 wins.
After 2 games in 2022, its quite clear Pitt’s returning starters on the OL haven’t performed as expected. With all that experience returning, it still has resulted in 2 QBs being under assault and causing massive disruption in the passing game.
Enough excuses, take out the pocket books and support Pitt Football. Or face being a Group of 5 has-been program. The choice is yours – Pitt fans. It reminds us of the Golden Panthers of the 1970s.

Winning a title is never easy – in any sport, in any division. For all the abuse the Coastal Division of the ACC Conference takes, it happens to be a very solid and competitively balanced group of teams. The truth is there is a lot of parity in college football right now except for maybe 5-10 teams. For Pitt, the secret of its success has been player development. Even recruiting has been a bit sub-par for the Panthers compared to its peers.
