Will Pitt Land Chicago DT?

Pat Narduzzi will lose senior defensive tackles KK Mosley-Smith and Darryl Render after this upcoming season.  Therefore, the coaching staff is doing its best to re-stock the position.

Pitt has already received verbal commitments from Ohio DT Bryce Hargrove and Central Catholic DT Rashad Wheeler.  Now they have their eyes set on Chicago DT Amir Watts.

Watts (6-3, 270) is available again after de-committing from Western Michigan on Friday. The 3-star defensive tackle surprised many when he gave a verbal to Western Michigan back in April.

DreamBackfield.com caught up with Watts and first asked him why he changed his mind about Western Michigan?

According to Watts, “I want to make a well rounded decision and visit as many schools as possible.”

Now that he’s a “free agent” what schools interest Watts the most? Watts told me “Pitt, Tennessee, Kansas, Minnesota, Purdue, Syracuse and Rutgers.”

Watts told me that since his change of heart, Pitt has been in contact him. He’s been hearing from Pitt defensive line coach Tom Sims and Pitt Director of Recruiting Mark Kabala.

Watts is in the process of doing homework on prospective schools but he did have a couple things to say about Pitt. “I know that Coach Narduzzi is known for being a  great defensive coach and that Pitt is an up and coming team with a strong coaching staff”, said Watts.

Watts is currently ranked the 36th best defensive tackle in the country by Rivals.com.  He calls himself a versatile player that’s strong against the run and can also rush the passer.

This time around, what is the top thing Watts is looking for in a school? “It would be its development of players and the team culture”, said Watts.

In the next few weeks, Watts will be coming up with a game plan for possible trips and visits but things look good for Pitt.

“Nothing is set in stone but I want to get out to Pitt real soon”, said Watts.

It’s way too early to get a read on Amir Watts but I feel Pitt will be a real serious contender for him.
