Coach Murphy’s Corner: Pitt vs. North Carolina: The Value of Game Experience

By Terry Murphy

Coach Narduzzi and Offensive Coordinator Cade Bell made the right decision starting quarterback Holden Geriner. However, as the game progressed into the second half, his limited game experience became increasingly evident.

Geriner did a masterful job executing the opening script. Whether it consisted of ten plays or fifteen, he appeared comfortable with the rhythm of the offense and understood his progressions. As the game continued, however, he became more reactive than anticipatory.

That difference showed in his mechanics. He often threw from an unstable base, overstriding or relying too heavily on his upper body to deliver the ball. At times, he appeared late on his reads, forcing throws into closing windows instead of anticipating where those windows would open. His launch point also became inconsistent.

Any one of those issues can be associated with fatigue. Taken together, though, they suggested to me that Geriner needs more live game experience. Recognizing a defense, anticipating a receiver’s break, and delivering the ball on time become more natural through meaningful repetitions.

I often tell young players: “You can’t cheat the game of football. The only way to get great at football is to play football.”

This week, I expect Geriner to improve. I expect better rhythm throws, a more balanced delivery, and greater consistency moving the offense. The keys will be recognizing what the defense is showing him, anticipating throwing windows, maintaining a consistent launch point, and staying composed when the play doesn’t unfold as expected.

He now has that game experience to build on. I believe Geriner will have a great game this week.
