Sometimes five-star players out of high school don’t blossom until their senior year in college. Sometimes they fade out altogether. Whether Lamar Patterson has lived up to his high school ranking (he was rated anywhere from 3-5 stars by various services) prior to this season or not, it looks like he is peaking at just the right time.

Patterson pumped in 24 points, while Talib Zanna added 14 points and Cameron Wright contributed 13 points in the Championship Game to lead Pitt over Stanford 88-67 in the Progressive Legends Classic in Brooklyn, NY on Tue 11/26.

Pitt shot a blistering 88% (30 for 34) from the foul line, including 9 for 11 from Patterson, which has been a pleasant surprise for this year’s Pitt team that has struggled at the line in the 10+ seasons under Jamie Dixon.

Stanford was paced by 20 points from forward Dwight Powell along with 16 points from guard Anthony Brown and fell to 5-2 on the season.

Pitt never trailed in the ballgame and led at halftime at 45-28.

But it was Patterson who stole the show of the tournament. He was brilliant on both sides of the floor, offensively and defensively, and clearly has emerged as Pitt’s “go-to” player. He was 3 for 6 from beyond the arc and showed his versatility by dishing out 6 assists along with 2 steals and 1 block.

Next up for Pitt is the “City Game” against Duquesne on Saturday, 11/30. Tipoff is scheduled for 1pm EST on the CBS Sports Network.
